Why is an ETA Essential When Travelling to Canada?
Traveling to Canada can be a breeze, especially if you’re country is declared visa-exempt. However, you still need to apply for an ETA. Here are some reasons why you should apply for an ETA before going to Canada.
What is an ETA?
An Electronic Travel Authorization or an ETA is an indispensable requirement for visa-exempt foreigners going to Canada by air. Regardless if you’re country is exempted from applying for a visa in Canada, you will not be allowed to enter Canadian territory without it. This means if you are a citizen from a visa-exempt country traveling to or through Canada via plane, then you are required by Canadian law to have an ETA.
Applying for an ETA is easy. Confirmation can happen as fast as a few minutes with the latest being three days.
Who Can Apply for an ETA?
These are the people who need to apply for an ETA:
- Lawful Permanent Residents of the US – must present a valid passport and their green card
- Visa-exempt foreign nationals – individuals who are included in Canada’s visa-exempt countries who are traveling via plane. Other types of transportation will not need an ETA
- Selec visa-required nationals – those who are traveling via plane instead of a visa
Benefits of having an ETA
If you successfully applied for an ETA, you can enter and exit Canada within six months. You do not need to reapply within six months or your renewal of passport, whichever comes first. If you need to extend your stay in Canada, you need to apply for an extension of your stay. Also, when you arrive in Canada, your chances of being admitted by Border Officers may increase once you present your document.
What Happens if I Did Not Apply for an ETA?
ETA is a mandatory requirement. You would be prevented from boarding your flight unless you presented your ETA. If you happen to apply for an ETA but have not received any confirmation regarding your application, then you will still be unable to board your plane. Regardless of any mishaps during your application, without an ETA, you will be refused entry.
Without an ETA Canada, you cannot be admitted to their country. To avoid delays, apply for an ETA at least three days before your travel. This will allow you to have time to check if there are problems with your application.
